Location Alamo Lamar 3
About  In 1978, Director, Martin Scorsese turned his cameras on his friend, Steven Prince. Best known for his role as the gun salesman in Taxi Driver, Steven was a true-life raconteur, an actor, an ex-drug addict, and road manager for Neil Diamond, Steven's life was to Scorsese more fascinating than what any screenwriter could dream up. The documentary that emerged, "American Boy"was to become one of Scorsese most compelling, but often overlooked projects.
Now three decades later and in a new setting, Steven Prince recounts his days since American Boy and tells why he turned his back on the entertainment industry. Still, as he composes his latest chapter, his ability to grip an audience remains. From placating construction boss to rock-star-girlfriend pacifier; concrete bunker builder to Cannes festival guest, Steven, the American Boy, extends the epic, as the American Prince.
American Boy will be screened immediately following American Prince.

Obsessive Branding Disorder
64 Attendees
Location Austin Convention Ctr
About  A successful brand creates a positive association in a customer's mind, sells a promise, and tells a story about who we are. The virtues of creating brand identity to attract product sales have been acknowledged for decades. But branding?once considered a helpful, rather than necessary, flourish?has assumed status in today's world as a key ingredient to winning business. America pours upwards of $300 billion dollars into branding every year. On any given day, each of us is bombarded by between 3,000 and 5,000 ads. In myriad ways, we are subtly branded through every chapter of our lives: by the clothes whose logos we complacently sport, by the music we listen to, by the beverages we drink and the food we eat, by the books we read, even by the neighborhoods in which we choose to live. With hundreds of new products arriving on retail shelves every day, and the rise of cheaper foreign brands and the house brands of mega-stores like Target and Wal-Mart, American companies are increasingly resorting to image overhauls to attract customers in lieu of improvements to product quality or functionality. Identity, in a sea of nearly indistinguishable items, is more important than ever before. Yet while innovative packaging commands attention, it often does so at considerable cost to the businesses and consumers responsible for fueling an industry of shape-shifting. In his trenchant analysis of a business stratagem gone wrong, Lucas Conley offers us a long overdue investigation into our culture of obsession. From sensory specialists to word-of-mouth marketers and executives keen to leave their mark, we are introduced to the unforgettable cast of characters responsible for getting our attention from often insidious, emotionally charged angles. In a landscape punctuated by brand churches and tribes, Conley lifts the veil on an unchecked phenomenon and requires us to consider the grave ramifications of our branded world. As hilarious as it is frightening, OBD: Obsessive Branding Disorder skillfully reexamines our buying habits to illustrate the chilling impact of the industry masterminds responsible for capturing our attention and seducing us to buy?at any cost.

Online Content: Transforming Piracy Into Profit
51 Attendees
Location Hilton
About  Knowingly or not, people frequently interact with 'stolen' online content - music, video, games, print or otherwise. The viral nature of the Internet has turned piracy of all sorts into a significant issue for many online content producers. Is it possible to transform the challenges posed by the way people freely share content online into scalable revenue opportunities? To do so companies need to start looking at ways to effectively leverage online content proliferation, in order to transform it into direct profit for content creators. This panel will consist of representatives from online content categories (games, video and print) that are actively implementing new models of syndication and distribution that offer real solutions to this issue. The conversation will center around solutions that are currently being used to create revenue opportunities from basic online content-sharing behavior, fundamentally changing the way that content creators benefit from the online distribution of their work. Speakers will look at several technologies and methods being used across different content categories, and talk about how to best leverage distribution and syndication to transform the viral nature of the Internet into a real revenue stream for content creators.

Every day we witness ego driven squabbles and arguments play out on our twitter streams (often carefully orchestrated between the participants via the back channels). His mission is to see what becomes of his, and North America?s, obsessions -- pop songs and sitcoms, Hollywood movies and shoot-em-up video games, muscle cars and punk music -- when they make their way into the Muslim world. Over the course of his journey, Poplak is body slammed by WWE fans in Afghanistan, hangs out with hip-hop artists in Palestine, head bangs to heavy metal in Cairo, investigates an Arabized version of The Simpsons in Dubai, discovers a world of extreme makeovers in Beirut, bowls with the chief of police in small-town Kazakhstan, and encounters a mysterious Texan building rocket-propelled batmobiles for a clientele of sheikhs. With uproarious humour and keen cultural insight, The Sheikh?s Batmobile asks some vital questions: How is American pop culture consumed and reinterpreted in the Muslim world? Does it change the way they see us, and themselves? And can it bridge the vast differences that are tearing our world apart? See www.sheikhsbatmobile.com

About  Severe Clear is based on the memoir by First Lieutenant Mike Scotti as well as video footage shot by him and other members of 1st Battalion, 4th Marines on the outset of the 2003 invasion of Iraqi. Through their cameras we see the raw sounds of war, capturing the harrowing three hundred mile charge to Baghdad through hostile enemy territory. The footage used to create Severe Clear was never shot for the purpose of making a movie. In this digital age of embedded reporters, the film truly strips the barriers between audience and soldier, personalizing the fear, moral conundrum and adrenaline rush of life on the battlefield. Severe Clear offers an unflinching look at the uncertainty, disorder and chaos of war from the remarkable perspective of one Marine.

About  Wry, hilarious, and profoundly genuine, this debut collection of literary essays is a celebration of fallibility and haplessness in all their glory. From despoiling an exhibit at the Natural History Museum to provoking the ire of her first boss to siccing the cops on her mysterious neighbor, Crosley can do no right despite the best of intentions-or perhaps because of them. Together, these essays create a startlingly funny and revealing portrait of a complex and utterly recognizable character that's aiming for the stars but hits the ceiling, and the inimitable city that has helped shape who she is. I Was Told There'd Be Cake introduces a strikingly original voice, chronicling the struggles and unexpected beauty of modern urban life.

Social relationships in Russian society have changed a great deal in recent years. In this turbulent period, the country's own conception of its women has come under great pressure, and this has major consequences for how men and women get along with each other. What is expected of you as a young woman these days? And even more importantly, how can you make sure to appeal to the contemporary, successful Russian man? The answer to these questions is the Bitch Academy, a training school for the modern-day gold digger. The male course instructor employs unorthodox methods. About  Abner Meecham, an aging Tennessee farmer discarded to a nursing facility by his lawyer son, flees the old folks' home and catches a ride back to his country farm to live out his days in peace. Upon his return, he discovers that his son has leased the farm to Abner's old enemy and his white trash family. Not one to suffer fools or go down easy, Abner moves into the old tenant shack on the property and declares that he won't leave until the farm is returned to his possession. But Lonzo Choat, the new tenant, has no intention to move out or give in to the old man's demands.
This sets up a ruthless grudge match between Abner and Choat, each man right in his own eyes, each too stubborn to give an inch. Angered by his son's betrayal, and haunted by recurring dreams of his long-dead wife, Abner sets about his own path toward reclaiming his life. Lines are drawn, threats are made, and the simmering tension under the Southern sun erupts, inevitably, into savagery.

As they all take their bees to California's enormous annual almond pollination (an event so large it requires the presence of the majority of bees in the US) it becomes painfully and poignantly clear the bind that they are in. 'If all the bees die, what do you have to live for?' asks Matt Hutchens . It's not just a question for the beekeepers, it's a question for all of us.

About  PASSING STRANGE is the Spike Lee-directed film featuring the award-winning Broadway rock musical, Passing Strange. The Broadway show won numerous Best Musical awards (Drama Desk, NY Film Critics Circle, Obie) and the Tony Award in 2008 for Best Book of a Musical.
PASSING STRANGE is the semi-autobiographical story of a young black man who leaves behind his middle-class, church-ruled upbringing in mid-1970s LA to travel to Europe in search of his artistic and personal identity, or what he calls "the real." In the end he finds complexity and even hypocrisy are not limited to middle-class black-American life, and that while to him art may be more real than life, only love is truly more than real.

About  The Horseman is the feature-length debut from 26 year old Australian director Steve Kastrissios. This raw, action-filled revenge drama, which received awards for both Best Australian Film and Best Australian Director at the 2008 Melbourne Underground Film Festival, signals the emergence of a serious new talent. The Horseman tells the story of Christian Forteski (played by veteran Australian actor Peter Marshall) whose drug addicted daughter dies after appearing in an amateur porn video. Christian deals with his grief by burning, kicking, smashing and stabbing his way through the network of pornographers involved in the video. The Horseman is a lean, tight film that boils down the revenge formula to its most essential, time-tested elements: an engaging story, interesting characters, and a powerful dose of skull-pounding violence

About  Though the film quickly cannonballs into severe supernatural infestations that tear a home asunder, this haunting is a mighty step forward from Amityville. Virginia Madsen (Sideways) stars in the true story of a mother who relocates her family near a rural clinic to treat her ailing teenager, unaware that the house they've purchased is a former mortuary packed with countless tortured souls. In the grandest bygone '70s horror style, a troubled exorcist (Elias Koteas) is called in to assist, but his intervention will inevitably drag out something worse than anyone could expect. This is the feature debut from lauded horror shorts director/producer Cornwell, who dazzled Fantastic Fest audiences in 2005 with "Ward 13" and again in 2006 with "The Ancient Rite of Corey McGillis.
