About Casimiro is the story of an illegal immigrant living in central Texas. As we follow him throughout his daily routine we realize the difficulties, both physical and emotional he is forced to confront. Casimiro begins his day trying to write an encouraging and positive letter to his family back in his homeland. As the day progresses, we can experience that the American dream Casimiro was after has resulted in a much more difficult journey, one which he has to overcome alone. His solitude and inability to adapt to a strange world ultimately create a distance between Casimiro and his family, one that goes beyond the physical boundaries of countries and cultures.

About Over the past 10 years the growth of digital technology and communications has exploded at a dizzying pace. Home recording studios, MySpace pages, cell phones and digital cameras fill the cultural landscape of America - not to mention Africa, The Middle East, Asia and the rest of the developed and developing world. As these new tools proliferate, you find rappers in Africa, metal groups in Iran and B-Boys in Korea. Through these cultural influences the world is getting both smaller and flatter - and at a pace faster than we can imagine. But what is really happening here? Is this the hand of American cultural imperialism - or are youth worldwide taking what the West has created and rewriting the rules of the game? New forms of music, subgenres and cultural fusions are creating new identities in their own countries, and even taking root in the United States, as seen with the rise in popularity of artists such as MIA, K'naan and Kenna.

About 'Breaking Upwards' follows a young New York couple who, after four years together, have grown stifled. Desperate to escape their ennui, but fearful of life apart, they decide to intricately strategize their own break up. The film blurs the line between fiction and non-fiction by casting real life couple (and filmmakers) Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones as themselves. Together they explore alternatives to monogamy, inventing rules and boundaries in an effort to avoid pain. An uncensored look at young love, lust, and the pangs of codependency, 'Breaking Upwards' follows its characters as they navigate each others' emotions across the city they love. It begs the question: is it ever possible to grow apart together?

It Came From Kuchar

About IT CAME FROM KUCHAR is a hilarious and touching documentary about the legendary, underground filmmaking twins, the Kuchar brothers. As kids in the 1950s, George and Mike Kuchar began making no-budget epics in their Bronx neighborhood starring friends and family with their 8mm camera.
In the 1960s the Kuchars became part of Warhol's New York, underground film scene.
The Kuchar brother's films have inspired many prominent filmmakers, including John Waters, Buck Henry, Atom Egoyan, Guy Maddin and Wayne Wang (all interviewed in this film).
IT CAME FROM KUCHAR interweaves the brother's lives, their admirers, a history of underground film and a 'greatest hits' of Kuchar clips into a hilarious and touching stream of consciousness tale.

About An extraordinary look at 4 blind teens. The parallel stories of 2 freshmen and 2 seniors unfold over the course of one dynamic year at the Texas School for the Blind in Austin. EYES offers a fresh perspective on growing up and fitting in.
Distilled from over 250 hours of footage, this experiential doc captures a textured portrait of its characters. Director Keith Maitland worked closely with the film's subjects to produce sequences of stylized rotoscopic animation to complement the film's observational aesthetic.
Forced to confront the world without sight, they share their thoughts, their perceptions, their inner-visions of the outer world. You cannot understand their perceptions without challenging your own.
How do you see yourself when you can't see at all?

About St. Nick is the story of a brother and sister on the run. He's eleven, she's nine. They've left their home for some unknown reason, and are living in the woods, hiding in barns and sheds, doing what they can to survive. As the bitter Texas winter sets in, they strike up residence in an abandoned house and, for a brief, bittersweet period, manage to escape the harsh realities of their circumstances.

Great Expectations: Artist Development Meets Economic Reality
32 Attendees
Location
Austin Convention Ctr
About They've been asking "Whatever happened to Artist Development?" for years - but only now, as the music industry undergoes painful evolutionary change, do we have a broad enough perspective to try to answer the question. As various interests jockey for position in the new landscape, where will the new success stories come from? What kind of artists and companies will provide the models for meaningful, sustainable music careers? The current roles of artists, labels, managers, and others force us to look more closely at what the term "artist development" actually means to each stakeholder, and to examine how modern realities have altered the game.
Speaker Info Pete Ganbarg (Exec VPres/Head of A&R, Atlantic Records), Ulysses Hueppauff (Pres, Halbe Miete Management/Publishing/Networking), Tony Kiewel (Sub Pop Records), Dan Mackta (Sr Dir Mktg, JIVE Label Group), Ian Montone (Pres, Monotone Inc), Mandi Perkins (Artist, )

About One of those beautiful, unplanned exchanges happened when a fan asked Dave Marsh, "Are you the one that hates the Doors?" Marsh replied, yeah. "It was a bad poet with a guy that ought to be in a cocktail lounge playing keyboards. Pretty good guitar player, though" The 'critic' part of rock criticism will be discussed in detail. Names will be named, and exalted reputations will be savaged. In an era where many blogs and magazines are loathe to print anything negative, perspective and balance is lost. Regain your footing at our acid-tongued rumble.

The Underdogs: Living Large On Kids Music
9 Attendees
Location
Austin Convention Ctr
About Even though the children's music market is largely dominated by the BIG conglomerates, there is still room for the "Underdogs" of family music to break through. A massive nation wide movement of high quality kids music is brewing that can only be compared to the punk rebellion of the late 1970s. It's DIY to the max. Though this independent spirit cultivates some great music, it is anything but easy. There is still no direct route to the BIG time. This panel will uncover the potential of the industry to calcify itself and the ability of new independent entertainment entities to aggregate the Underdogs through mass channels of distribution. Live large on kids music!
Speaker Info Bill Childs (Producer/Host, WRSI-FM: Spare the Rock Spoil the Child), Doug Cohn (SVP Music Mktg & Talent, Nickelodeon/MTV Networks Kids & Family), Tor Hyams (Owner, HyLo Entertainment), Ted Kryczko (Vice-President A&R Catalog Development, Walt Disney Records), Adam Levy (Artist, The Honeydogs/Bunny Clogs), Veronica Villarreal (VP Mktg & Business Dev, E1 Music)

About Severe Clear is based on the memoir by First Lieutenant Mike Scotti as well as video footage shot by him and other members of 1st Battalion, 4th Marines on the outset of the 2003 invasion of Iraqi. Through their cameras we see the raw sounds of war, capturing the harrowing three hundred mile charge to Baghdad through hostile enemy territory. The footage used to create Severe Clear was never shot for the purpose of making a movie. In this digital age of embedded reporters, the film truly strips the barriers between audience and soldier, personalizing the fear, moral conundrum and adrenaline rush of life on the battlefield. Severe Clear offers an unflinching look at the uncertainty, disorder and chaos of war from the remarkable perspective of one Marine.

About A juncture in the lives of performance art revolutionaries, 'Sissyboy' explores the Portland-based gender-bending drag troupe that has served up their audacity, ambivalence and social commentary throughout the Rose City for over 3 years before hundreds of devoted fans.
Go behind the scenes for a glimpse of Sissyboy's last year of existence through the eyes of 1st-time filmmaker Katie Turinski. The rehearsals, relationships, joys and heartaches experienced by this patchwork family of outcasts should be remembered not just as a performance art movement, but also an insight into the human condition.
Please enjoy the hubris & humanity offered by this troupe of societal outsiders as you discover what it means to be a Sissy.

About It all starts with getting knocked up. An unplanned pregnancy for an unplanned girl sets off SUNSHINE, a playful, yet ultimately stirring self-portrait of an adopted woman driven to search for answers through reconnection with her biological mother. Woven together from over 10 years of super 8 and video home movies, intimate family interviews, shimmering dance sequences and stylized reenactments, SUNSHINE offers a refreshingly rare glimpse on the current day transformations taking place within our most sacred of institutions.Young, pregnant, single and unprepared, the daughter/director struggles with the incredible ironies of the family, as she struggles to raise her own daughter and understand the plight of her biological mother.

About Like the variety of perspectives Faulkner offered in his classic novel, artists' views of the music biz are filtered through their particular experiences. Without denying the difficulties facing the recorded music market, and the economy as a whole, there are opportunities for intrepid musicians to find fans and make a career out of their creativity. The artists and execs on this panel bring unique histories to their current work, and they'll share their thoughts about furthering their goals in this challenging era. But maybe we'll leave Faulkner's themes of incest and despair out of this panel.
Speaker Info Lynn Barstow (Program Dir , Emmis Austin Radio/KGSR/KROX), (Nada Surf), (Pres, Hits Magazine), (Aqualung), (Artist, The Airborne Toxic Event), Jordan Kurland (Owner, Zeitgeist Artist Management LTD), Anya Marina (Performer, Anya Marina), (Sub Pop Records), (Artist, New York Dolls)

About The Big Squeeze is a joyful leap into the heart of Texas music. And where there's music there's usually some grilling going on. That's why Herminio Ramirez builds a stage right in the tiny kitchen of their Houston home for his son John. From the urban barrios of Houston to the colonias along the U.S.-Mexican border, legacies fueled by the passion-stirring combination of family, friends and food, is being passed along. In The Big Squeeze, we follow 16 year old John Ramirez and other young musicians as they do battle at the statewide accordion throwdown.

About Paul Carty is 19, good-looking, funny, clever Ð and bored out of his mind. His mother died a year ago. He lives in middle class suburbia with his silently grieving father and feisty young sister, Molly. Carty works as a junior civil servant and spends all his wages on clubs, records, football and gigs. It's at a Bunnymen gig that he meets Elvis. Elvis changes everything.
He's part of a gang called The Pack. The Pack are notorious; they dress in a cultish, almost effeminate style that's at odds with the boneheads and bootboys they fight against. They have androgynous wedge haircuts worn with Fred Perry shirts, Lois jeans and Adidas Forest Hills training shoes. For as long as he has been going to football, Carty has been fascinated by The Pack. Now Elvis seems to be offering him a way in.
Except he isn't. For all that Carty lionises The Pack, Elvis dilutes his idealism. He warns Carty that these lads are nobodies. Elvis is a council estate romantic, a dreamer with big plans about escaping to Berlin, New York, anywhereÉ Anywhere, so long as Carty comes with him. He's been waiting all his life for someone like Carty, someone he can talk with and relate to about art, music, poetry...suicide. They love the same bands - Magazine, Joy Division, Wire - and think the same way; or so Elvis wants to believe. He's smitten with his new mate and plans the big journeys they'll make together.
But Carty soon gets to know the 'other' Elvis - moody, fatalistic and possessive. He throws as many obstacles as he can in Carty's path, whenever he fears he's losing him. Elvis is all too well aware how badly Carty craves the Pack lifestyle, and tries to keep him away - but in spite of all his warnings, Carty's on a collision course, plunging deeper into their dark and vicious world. Elvis can see how Carty's fascination is blinding him, yet he's powerless to pull him back from the brink. Once he's been on his first awayday and sampled the buzz of random violence, Carty just wants more, more, more...
But Carty is never truly accepted by the gang. He's there on sufferance, simply because his sponsor, the psychotic yet enigmatic Elvis is so revered. Their conflict reaches its crisis as Carty tries harder and harder to impress the wild boys, while Elvis sinks deeper into paranoia and jealousy. Something has to break.

About Stanless Steel can leg-press 10,000 pound dump trucks, drive nails through boards with just his bare hands, and can even bend a U.S. penny in his fingersÑa feat no one else in the world can accomplish. These are acts, he feels, not just of physical strength but of mental and emotional strengthÑdemonstrations of the kind of change possible through will-power and perseverance. Yet as Stan reaches middle age, career disappointments and difficult personal relationships begin to test these strengths and force him to struggle with the weaknesses around himÑincluding his own.
Befitting its subject's sense of integrity and artistic purity, Strongman uses a hard-core verite approach and applies it to a thoroughly modern story.

About In Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo, filmmaker Bradley Beesley visits and explores an oddball American phenomenon: that of the prison rodeo. He journeys with his cameras to Oklahoma State Prison - the only remaining U.S. prison rodeo that is actually located on penitentiary grounds - and watches, cameras rolling, as ill-prepared male and female convicts risk their lives for the promise of cash and a brief spotlight.

About From the ghettos of Philadelphia to the boardrooms of Los Angeles, NUMBER ONE WITH A BULLET pulls back the curtain on gun violence in Hip Hop. This documentary follows five rappers with experience on both ends of the barrel (Young Buck, B Real, Obie Trice, The Last Mr. Bigg, and 40 Glocc) as they take viewers back to the scenes of the crimes and into their darkest hours. They are joined by a diverse cast of Hip Hop luminaries (Mos Def, KRS One, Ice Cube and more), community activists, police officers, doctors and citizens to expose the physical, mental and emotional scars of gun violence in the streets and in the music.
From the makers of BEEF, QD3 Entertainment bring you NUMBER ONE WITH A BULLET, a groundbreaking look into the epidemiology of gun violence within Urban America.

About Lab technician Virgil Gurdies embarks on an epic quest to create the greatest goat cheese the world has ever known, and reclaim the heart of his beloved Angie. She has taken a new job in Detroit and to follow her means signing his life over to his soul-sapping career in artificial flavor additives. To stay behind and pursue his newfound passion for fine artisanal goat cheese, is to risk losing her forever. Despite his lack of resources, experience, or basic competency in the field of agriculture, Virgil heads for the hills (literally) with a felonious German baker, a grave-digging hermit, and a tiny white goat named Artois. With Angie awaiting his imminent return and a conference of the International Cheese Consortium just a few months away, he has no choice but to go for broke. Throw away everything he has on a gamble: That, before it is too late, he can craft a cheese that will change the world. A cheese that will buy him a new life. A cheese of destiny.

If fourboxes.tv isn't just more internet BS, then a crazed creep they call Havoc is building enough bombs to, like, kill everybody.

About Over the Hills and Far Away is a film about one family's struggle to find answers to their son's autism. Shot over the course of two years, this film follows the Isaacson family as they journey on horseback across Mongolia from healer to healer, and the amazing healings they found for their son, and for themselves. An inspiration to think outside the box, a travel adventure, an insight into shamanic traditions, the autistic mind, and man's relationship with animals; at its heart, Over the Hills and Far Away is a film about a family that went to the edge of the earth to find a way into their son's life.

About A kaleidoscopic film portrait of Shelly Brown, a twenty-three-year-old alienated urban misfit recently released from a psychiatric hospital. Starring Stella Schnabel, featuring Rene Ricard and introducing other notable New York personalities, the film gives pathos to the frenzy of the youthful desire for acceptance.
Shot in a variety of styles and formats, YOU WONT MISS ME mixes non-actors with professionals, verité with staging, order with abstraction, to paint an evocative picture of a contemporary rebel.

About Described by the New York Times as "Second City-seasoned masters of long form improv", Tj Jagodowski and David Pasquesi have become living legends in their field. Their performances of entirely improvised, character-driven, often hilarious and wholly original one-hour plays have mesmerized audiences worldwide. Exploring the folds of faith that underlie their relationship and the transcendental forces that govern their improvisation, TRUST US, THIS IS ALL MADE UP features an unforgettable live performance recorded at New York's Barrow Street Theater. Whether you're a student of improvisation or simply interested in the underpinnings of human imagination and the depths of mutual understanding, this journey will leave you laughing, guessing, and in awe of this altogether remarkable feat.

About TRIMPIN: THE SOUND OF INVENTION is an amusing journey through the musical world of an eccentric creative genius.
Artist/inventor/engineer/composer Trimpin has never been represented by a gallery, a dealer, or a manager, and doesn't have a cellphone or a website Ð yet his freewheeling sculptures and outrageous musical experiments are cherished by artists, musicians, and museums all over the planet.
Filmed over the course of two years, this feature doc shows the iconoclastic artist:- building a 60-foot tower of self-tuning, automatic electric guitars; - experimenting with the Kronos Quartet on a variety of toy and electronic instruments; - designing a perpetual motion sculpture in a glass foundry; - creating a giant marimba ensemble that converts real-time earthquake data into music;and always in the midst of inventing wild sonic and kinetic gizmos.
An exploration of a creative genius whose self-made world resembles both Santa's workshop and Frankenstein's lab, TRIMPIN: THE SOUND OF INVENTION will delight anyone interested in the mysteries, pitfalls, and sheer joys of creative experiment.

About In 1989, unwitting Utah actors starred in the undisputed Worst Movie in History: TROLL 2. Two decades later, the legendarily inept film's child star unravels the improbable, heartfelt story of an Alabamadentist-turned-cult movie icon and an Italian filmmaker who come to terms with this genuine, internationally revered cinematic failure.

About An evil drow elf is displaced by Hurricane Katrina. A sanitation worker lures friends into a Sphere of Annihilation. A failed super-villian starts a cable-access show involving ninjas, puppets and a cooking segment.
These are the characters, real and imagined, of Keven McAlester's documentary THE DUNGEON MASTERS. Against the backdrop of crumbling middle-class America, two men and one woman devote their lives to Dungeons and Dragons, the storied role-playing game, and its various descendants. As their baroque fantasies clash with mundane real lives, the characters find it increasingly difficult to allay their fear, loneliness, and disappointment with the game's imaginary triumphs. Soon the true heroic act of each character's real life emerges, and the film follows each as he or she summons the courage to face it. Along the way, THE DUNGEON MASTERS re-imagines the tropes of classic heroic cinema, creating an intimate portrait of minor struggles and triumphs writ large.

About 'Pulling John' is the universal story of a champion, who after 25 years of success is now burdened with the inevitable transformation of aging. John Brzenk, the legendary armwrestler, who works as an airline mechanic by day must decide whether to leave the sport he was raised on or wait to be defeated by 2 up and coming titans. Voevoda from Russia, Bagent from West Virginia and Yoshi from Tokyo are the colorful characters who have been raised on the legend of John Brzenk. These men define themselves by not becoming champions but by defeating the legend that is known as Brzenk. In a philosophical and thrilling ride, 'Pulling John' culminates at the Zloty Tur Championship in Warsaw, where Bagent and Voevoda have the chance of their life, to dethrone the conflicted Brzenk.

About A Woodsman takes us on a journey of funny, epic proportions. He addresses us in rhyme, and wins our love while showing us that even beings who seem happy and sweet have a side of them which craves blood, primal rage, and the award of conquering, say, a God. Incorporating outdoor stopmotion animation, pixilation, and stunning visual illusions, 'I live in the Woods' takes us on a flurry of back and forth emotions, while at the same time questioning the image of a God worshipped by the masses of America.

About Mark (Mark Doherty) is having a bad day. A struggling actor, he's just been through the ordeal of yet another fruitless audition for a bit part in a movie. With his long-suffering girlfriend about to walk out and his landlord ready to evict him he's only got his best mate Pierce (Dylan Moran) and their joint ambition of writing a career-breaking film to sustain him.
Life's not easy, but things are about to get worseÉmuch worse, and then someone dies and things get really bad!
