About  In RiP: A remix manifesto, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers. The film's central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil's Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the ride.A participatory media experiment, from day one, Brett shares his raw footage at opensourcecinema.org, for anyone to remix. This movie-as-mash-up method allows these remixes to become an integral part of the film. Doug Sahm's 'Mendocino'
13 Attendees
Location Austin Convention Ctr
About  The Sir Douglas Quintet pretended to be English, but they were Texas to the core. Doug Sahm started his career when he was in elementary school, and by the time he formed the Quintet in the mid-'60s had already made a world of music. Their first hit, "She's About a Mover" in 1965, reached the Top 15. Four years later Sir Douglas was storming the singles charts again with "Mendocino." Sahm had moved to northern California and found deep inspiration in the Humboldt County redwoods. When he resurrected the Sir Douglas Quintet in 1969 they immediately locked back into their magical sound, with Augie Meyers Vox organ lines leading the way. The Lone Star groover continued for 30 more years, spinning out some of the best music ever made, no matter what style was being played. And even if "Mendocino" was his last real American hit, Doug Sahm never looked back.

About  As this verite documentary film unfolds, viewers are drawn into an intimate family struggle. Tom Luckey is coping with recent and dramatic changes in his life. A sculptor, Tom was designing a three-story-tall climbable sculpture, the masterpiece of his career building interactive art, when he fell through a window and became paralyzed below his shoulders. Determined to finish his sculpture, Tom turned to his oldest son Spencer, an architect, for help. Spencer sees an opportunity to work with his father and to reclaim his boyhood relationship, which was interrupted by divorce and remarriage. As they try to forge a working relationship from a complex father-son relationship, Tom and Spencer find themselves reeling emotionally during the first year of Tom's paralysis, making working together explosive. Family dynamics are complicated by the fact that Tom's wife, Ettie, and Spencer don't get along. Stepmother and stepson, they become Tom's primary caretakers and companions, but can barely bring themselves to interact with one another. As Tom regains strength and ambition, but not mobility, enabling his artistic work while maintaining independence and sanity becomes a tricky balance for Tom, Spencer, and Ettie. LUCKEY is a portrait of a family in crisis and one man's efforts to create a new life in the wake of a devastating accident.

Is Collective Licensing for P-2-P File Sharing a Future Source of Income for the Music Industry?
37 Attendees
Location Austin Convention Ctr
About  Every day, unauthorized P-2-P file sharing exceeds the authorized sales of CDs and downloads. These distributions do not pay a single dime to creators and the companies that manufacture, market and distribute their works. With declining sales and a bad economy, is it finally time for the music industry to see this phenomenon as a potential source of income? Some analysts have suggested that the solution may be a voluntary ISP charge that would allow consumers to download music based on a monthly fee like HBO. What would this mean for record labels, recording artists, music publishers and songwriters?

About  "Neil Young Archives Volume I (1963-1972)" is an unprecedented collection on the life of an artist, an audiobiography of his first decade in music. It includes a vast array of unreleased recordings along with some of his most popular work, visual footage never before seen and an accompanying book of rare documents, photographs and hand-written lyrics. There has literally never been another release like it, and its long-rumored existence has become legendary. For the very first time in public, hear how the producers and technicians assembled Archives, pushing the boundaries of technology to encompass Neil Young's unrelenting vision. The BluRay edition of the collection includes the exclusive feature BD: Live, which allows downloads of new content to the BluRay player and incorporates it into the BluRay disc content, allowing owners to receive material after the initial purchase.

About  In 2008, British heavy metal legends IRON MAIDEN took rock and roll touring to new heights and embarked on the Somewhere Back in Time world tour. Flying in their customized Boeing 757 with 12 tons of equipment and 70 crew, Maiden traveled over 40,000 miles in just 45 days playing sold-out concerts from India to Los Angeles to the tip of South America. And not only did lead singer Bruce Dickinson perform all 23 shows, he also piloted the plane. IRON MAIDEN: FLIGHT 666 brings the road trip movie to the air, taking you behind the scenes and inside the cockpit of the most ambitious tour in rock history. The film shows one of the world's most influential bands captivating new fans in cultures across the globe without support from radio or mainstream media.

About  The 1950's was an idealistic time in American History. It was also the Atomic Age where new technology promised to both save humanity as well as destroy it. All of these factors gave birth to the most prolific genres in film history, 1950's Sci-Fi Cinema. More then just little green men, 50's Sci-fi Cinema provided inspiration for the generation who achieved one of the greatest accomplishments of mankind; Spaceflight. Monsters From The Id weaves the intersecting themes of over 30 films in order to tell the untold story of the Modern Scientist and his role in inspiring a nation. The film continues to explore the psychological and cultural impact of 50's Sci-Fi cinema in America and asks, 'where is science inspiration found today?'

About  Archie Williams (Gabriel Sunday) is a 17-year old media geek who has suddenly found himself the most talked-about kid in school. He has announced that he's going to kill himselfÑ on cameraÑ for a class project. His classmates, parents, Sierra- the most beautiful girl in school (Brooke Nevin), and a 'Shady Bunch' of shrinks, doctors, pill-pushers, and counselors descend on Archie. Some are hoping to save him, some want to imitate him, others try to push him over the brink. Archie films every moment of his high school experience, hiding nothing from his audience: realities of life, death, violence, sex, drugs, and the intense media overload and hypocrisy that bombard all teenagers.

Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo
21 Attendees
Location Alamo Ritz 2
About  Imagine cramming 128 million people onto an island the size of Montana Ð you would be pretty close to replicating the density of Japan. Not surprisingly, space is at a premium and ergonomic design is right up there next to godliness.
Yet, even in Tokyo, the pinnacle of this figurative 'can of sardines,' people of all ages still make room for a little bit of wilderness. It is only fitting that they have become captivated by nature's most efficient invention in space, design and function Ð insects.
Sold live in vending machines and department stores, plastic replicas included as prizes in the equivalent of a McDonald's Happy Meal and the subject of the No. 1 videogame, MushiKing, from the smallest backyard to the top of Mt. Fuji, insects inspire an enthusiasm in Japan seen nowhere else in this world. 'Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo' discovers why Japan developed this rich and enriching social relationship with insects.
Like a detective story, the film untangles the web of influences behind Japan's captivation with insects. It opens in modern-day Tokyo where a single beetle recently sold for $90,000 then slips back to the early 1800s, to the first cricket-selling business and the development of haiku and other forms of insect literature and art. Through history and adventure, Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo travels all the way back in time to stories of the fabled first emperor who named Japan the 'Isle of the Dragonflies.'
Along the way the film takes side trips to Zen temples and Buddhist Shrines, nature preserves and art museums in its quest for the inspirations that moved Japan into this fascination while other cultures hurtled off towards an almost universal and profound fear of insects.
Interspersed with the philosophies of one of Japan's best-selling authors and anatomists, Dr. Takeshi Yoro, and laced with poetry and art from Japan's history, this film becomes about much more than insects. 'Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo' is set to the rhythm of traditional Japanese values in its attention to detail, harmony, and the appreciation of the seemingly mundane. It quietly challenges the viewer to observe the world from an uncommon perspective that will shift the familiar to the fantastic and just might change not only the way we think about bugs, but the way we think about life.

For the Love of Movies: The Story of American Film Criticism
20 Attendees
Location Alamo Lamar 3
About  For the Love of Movies: The Story of American Film Criticism is the first documentary to dramatize the rich saga of American movie reviewing. Directed by Boston Phoenix critic, Gerald Peary, this movie offers an insider's view of the critics' profession, with commentary from America's best-regarded reviewers, including Roger Ebert, A.O. Scott, Lisa Schwarzbaum, Kenneth Turan. We also hear from articulate Internet reviewers, including Harry Knowles and Karina Longworth. Their stories are entertaining, humorous, personal and also historic. From the raw beginnings of criticism before The Birth of a Nation to the incendiary Pauline Kael-Andrew Sarris debates of the 1960s and 70s to the battle today between youthful on-liners and the print establishment, this documentary tells all.

About  MINE is a feature-length, independent documentary about the essential bond between humans and animals, set against the backdrop of one of the worst natural disasters in modern U.S. history: Hurricane Katrina. This gripping, character-driven story follows New Orleans residents as they attempt the daunting task of trying to reunite with their pets who have been adopted by families all over the country, and chronicles the custody battles that arise when two families love the same pet. Who determines the fate of the animals - and the people - involved? A compelling meditation on race, class and the power of compassion, MINE examines how we treat animals as an extension of how we view and treat each other.

Neil Young Trunk Show

Location Paramount
About  Trunk Show: a traveling display of unique goods, packed and unpacked along the way - in Neil Young's case it's a display of soul in the musical and spiritual sense. Jonathan Demme presents NEIL YOUNG TRUNK SHOW, with Young in the middle of a stage full of personal icons, at times alone in the center of a circle of his beloved acoustic guitars, at others in the midst of a handful of much-beloved musicians Ben Keith, Rick Rosas, Ralph Molina, Anthony 'sweatpea' Crawford and wife, Pegi Young. There are delicately offered piano/guitar/voice numbers like "Ambulance Blues" and "Mexico"; mesmerizing electric travelogues into the artist's psyche ("No Hidden Path"); searing, chaotic anthems like "Hurricane" and 'Spirit Road"; and rarely performed pieces, like 'Harvest" that provide glimpses of Young's less public persona. Shot with a mix of video and film cameras, mostly handheld, the NYTS follows the assembling and presenting of a concert in breathtakingly intimate fashion, catching lighter moments backstage and between songs with Neil, the band and the crew. On stage, at times using dramatically long takes, Demme allows the audience to experience Young opening up his heart song by song, and then blowing it all away in heated, uninhibited displays of rock and roll power.

About  In a fever dream where hands are people, one hand fights the pleasure of the bottle by telling his story through song.
This classic tale of loss and woe features Pablo Ribba (illuminados para el fuego) as Adan the troubadour. Adan's innermost woe drives him from his lonely and tortured existence to the numbing satisfaction of the bottle.
In this world, one can almost hear the tortured cry of a soul in despair as Adan plays the guitar from place to place, his head hung low, his spirits sagging. The weight of the world virtually rests on his small shoulders.
Though, in this case, they are not only shoulders, but the most expressive fingers you have ever seen.

About  Alone in a dark wood, 5 lonesome old men sit and ponder the meaning of their solitude. But they are not alone on this cold winter night. For a man older than time itself stands ready and willing to change everything with one swift motion. And he does, setting forth a chain reaction causing the world to spin wildly out of control, the forest grows and shrinks, snow lifts from the ground to the sky, dead mushrooms rise and shrink back to the earth, and the 5 lonely men grow slowly back to their young selves. This animated music video captures the cyclical nature of the Fleet Foxes tune in a magical, fantastically beautiful way.

About  Nerdcore rapper Terp 2 It hates the city of Orlando, Florida so much, he wrote the song 'Fuck This City' and then made a music video so everyone could feel and understand his hatred. Produced by internet comedy video group Studio 8, 'Fuck This City' turns the usual flashy hip hop music video conventions on their heads and smooshes you deep inside Terp's angry head. Yet lurking beneath the hearty mixture of no-holds-barred trash talk and abrasive imagery hides the goofy soul and wit of Terp 2 It. By the end of the video, you might find yourself wondering whether you should be more afraid for Orlando or for Terp, should the two ever cross each other's paths. 'Fuck This City' can be found on Terp 2 It's debut album The Freshest Dude from Studio 8 Records.

About  The music video "An Evening with Rthrtha" is a high-velocity psychedelic stop-motion animation made from thousands of photos on hundreds of layers using an eclectic array of analog animation techniques. The final result is a horrible/splendid array of bats, butterflies, that depicts "An Evening with Rthrtha".
As the band explained to the directors, "Rthrtha" is a large ancient and convivial pink bat that could fight large beasts on the order of Godzilla and Cthulu, but actually prefers a wild night out with friends.

About  Jerk it is our first music video, made for the band Thunderheist. It features skin giggling in slow motion, strobing animal prints, and a girl with a large rooster. After winning the band's contest, it premiered on pitchfork.tv. It has since received more attention than we ever imagined and for that we are humbled and truly grateful. We would like to thank Anna, Mike, Tristan, Caleb, Diana, Carey, Jennifer, Yoshiko, Eric, and Bronwyn for volunteering their time. Without them this video would not have been possible. We are also grateful to Grahm and Isis of Thunderheist and their manager Tash, and to all the bloggers and festival programmers who posted the video and took an interest in our work. Thanks!

About  The philosophy of materialism holds that the only thing that can be truly proven to exist is matter. Fundamentally, material composes all things and all phenomena are the result of material interactions; therefore, matter is the only substance and can neither be created or destroyed. Hence, we are all made of only what came before us yet discretely conceived through form; we are all made of earth and sky and stars.
Meridian uses time lapse footage coupled with a live action environment to describe the material connection between the ethereal universe and human perception. Featuring the track "The Daydream" by the ambient artist Tycho, star-scapes intersect a city and a female protagonist in the process of discovery within the context of ordinary life.

About  It's almost summer in Sweden and minor indiscretions and misbehavior abound. Leffe likes to show off his friends and play salacious pranks, especially when he's drinking. Meanwhile, a righteous grade-school teach doesn't know where to draw the line: she insists her fellow educators need a bit of instruction. Then there are two young teenage girls who like to pose for sexy photos and to party, but one night in a park, a complete stranger finds one of the girls passed out drunk. A humorous look at lessons to learn, lectures to give and lines not to cross.

About  Lorraine Schultz works as a nurse in a doctor's office. Every day she rides the bus to work, listens to her co-workers gossip, comes home. None of it really matters. After finding an issue of Shackled Monthly on the bus, Lorraine is drawn into a secret, seedy world of lonely men, cheap motel rooms, and whips and chains. Meanwhile, her roommate Adrian's dreams of becoming a glamorous fashion model are cut short when the only employment she can find is showcasing mattresses in a strip mall. Will Lorraine's secret life as a dominatrix be revealed? Will Adrian sell enough mattresses to be featured in the big coupon spread? In pursuing their hidden desires and misguided dreams, both girls find their paths crossing in ways they never expected. Yeah. Sure. Okay.

About  Abner Meecham, an aging Tennessee farmer discarded to a nursing facility by his lawyer son, flees the old folks' home and catches a ride back to his country farm to live out his days in peace. Upon his return, he discovers that his son has leased the farm to Abner's old enemy and his white trash family. Not one to suffer fools or go down easy, Abner moves into the old tenant shack on the property and declares that he won't leave until the farm is returned to his possession. But Lonzo Choat, the new tenant, has no intention to move out or give in to the old man's demands.
This sets up a ruthless grudge match between Abner and Choat, each man right in his own eyes, each too stubborn to give an inch. Angered by his son's betrayal, and haunted by recurring dreams of his long-dead wife, Abner sets about his own path toward reclaiming his life. Lines are drawn, threats are made, and the simmering tension under the Southern sun erupts, inevitably, into savagery.
